Register a death within 5 days in England and Wales (counted from when the medical examiner’s office says it can be registered), within 8 days of the death in Scotland, and within 5 days of the death in Northern Ireland.
What to take to the appointment
- Any documents showing the person’s full name, date and place of birth, last address and occupation — for example a passport, birth certificate, driving licence or council tax bill.
- Details of a surviving spouse or civil partner, if any.
- In Scotland and Northern Ireland, the doctor usually sends the medical certificate of cause of death to the registrar directly; in England and Wales the medical examiner’s office sends it.

Five days. Since the medical examiner system became statutory in September 2024, the five days start when the medical examiner’s office tells you the death can be registered — not from the date of death.
How long do you have to register a death in Scotland?
Eight days from the date of death, at any registration office in Scotland.
How long do you have to register a death in Northern Ireland?
Five days from the date of death, at any district registration office. The registrar may be able to register the death by phone.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
Contact the register office as soon as you can and explain. Registration can usually still go ahead, and extra time is normal if a coroner or procurator fiscal is involved.
